Synopsis Marina and the Clone is a comedy set in 1980s London. Marina is a glamorous but fading superstar of the big screen. She’s shared the red carpet with Hollywood greats and anyone she hasn’t worked with just isn’t worth knowing.
Now tired of the endless appearances she has to make in order to remain in the limelight, yet still craving the attention Marina jumps at the opportunity offered to her by the diabolically deranged Dr Barnabus.
Between them they create a clone of the younger Marina. The Clone is designed to be headline fodder, appear at all those tedious events required of the ultra famous and stand in when asked to appear at another Children in Need event.
Naturally there are teething problems leading Marina to wonder if it was really worth the five million quid she shelled out.
Character Bios
Marina Oliveto: mid 50s, female A mammoth of the stage, screen and television Marina is as big as they get. Or at least she was in her heyday. Marina is used to getting what she wants, she is direct, demanding and can be utterly charming. An alluring villain who looks down her nose at practically everyone.
We’re looking for a grand performance from someone who can own the room whilst being the comedy straight-woman to a ridiculous Clone.
The Clone: mid 20s, female An aspiring Miss Primrose Hill 1987, The Clone is a messed up character – especially after the lobotomy. Both glamorous and clueless; adoring and spiteful; over enthusiastic and a terrible drunk.
The right person should be a good mimic, have brilliant comedy timing and preferably be able to pull off Received Pronunciation.
Dr Barnabus: 30-45, male A plastic surgeon with a Frankesteinian side-line. Dr Barnabus is a slimy and manipulative character with a touch of the mad professor about him.
Two faced, divisive and ultimately out for himself Barnabus is dry, calculating and sneaky.
The right person for this role can deliver a smart London accent with a measured performance.
Maitre D / Reporter: 30s, male Two roles for one actor, the Maitre D is creepy and inappropriate with no sense of personal space. He works at the best restaurant in town but that doesn’t stop him for lingering a little too long over the salad.
The Reporter is a typical 80s fleet-street hack. A grotesque cockney with en eye for a headline story.
Seeking a versatile actor who is good with accents.
